A Suite of Robotic Solutions for Nuclear Waste Decommissioning

نویسندگان

چکیده

Dealing safely with nuclear waste is an imperative for the industry. Increasingly, robots are being developed to carry out complex tasks such as perceiving, grasping, cutting, and manipulating waste. Radioactive material can be sorted, either stored or disposed of appropriately, entirely through actions remotely controlled robots. Radiological characterisation also critical during decommissioning facilities. It involves detection labelling radiation levels, materials, contaminants, well determining other related parameters (e.g., thermal chemical), data visualised 3D scene models. This paper overviews work by researchers at QMUL Centre Advanced Robotics (ARQ), a partner in UK EPSRC National Nuclear (NCNR), consortium working on development radiation-hardened fit handle Three areas nuclear-related research covered here: human–robot interfaces remote operations, sensor delivery, intelligent robotic manipulation.

Plasma source mass spectrometry for radioactive waste characterisation in support of nuclear decommissioning: a review

The efficient characterization of nuclear waste materials represents a significant challenge during nuclear site decommissioning, with a range of radionuclides requiring measurement in varied and often complex sample matrices. Of the available measurement techniques, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has traditionally been applied to long-lived radionuclides, particularly in...

Robotic Inspection of Nuclear Waste Storage Facilities

Introduction Safe disposal of nuclear waste is a difficult problem. Long-term plans are to house nuclear waste permanently in underground facilities. In the near-term however, nuclear waste is stored in temporary storage facilities at various sites around the country. Federal and state regulations require periodic inspection of these storage facilities to insure storage vessel integrity and ver...

An Underwater Robotic Network for Monitoring Nuclear Waste Storage Pools

Nuclear power provides a significant portion of our current energy demand and is likely to become more wide spread with growing world population. However, the radioactive waste generated in these power plants must be stored for around 60 years in underwater storage pools before permanent disposal. These underwater storage environments must be carefully monitored and controlled to avoid an envir...
